Government Relations priorities
GR is dedicated to working with Seneca’s partners in advocacy (such as community groups, associations and think tanks) to promote the issues vital to Seneca’s success, including:
- The achievement of goals specific to Seneca’s Strategic Plan: Accessibility; national status; financial health; quality education and the expansion of international education;
- The generation of non-traditional non-operations-based revenue for Seneca’s educational programs and training services;
- Advocacy of key postsecondary education (PSE) policy issues of relevance to Seneca, such as the commercialization of applied research, the integration of foreign-trained professionals into the workplace; national recognition of college credits; and financial assistance for students; and
- Institutional compliance with Lobbyist Registration acts (federal and provincial).
Recent accomplishments
Seneca’s strong relationships with the federal, provincial and municipal governments have led to:
- Successful funding applications for the following government projects: Ontario Power Authority; ECE Pre-Apprenticeship Training Program; Toronto Urban Aboriginal Strategy; MTCU Aboriginal PSE and Training Action Plan; Knowledge Infrastructure Project (KIP) Newnham Campus; Ministry of Citizenship and Immigration and “Pathways to Employment for Internationally Trained Individuals;
- Various government funding and policy announcements at Seneca by federally and provincially elected officials, including Ontario Premier Dalton McGuinty; Ontario Minister of Training, Colleges and Universities John Milloy; and Federal Finance Minister Jim Flaherty (for more information, see GR news and events);
- Active participation with, and promotion of, Colleges Ontario and Polytechnics Canada and their priority issues; and
- Submissions to federal policy consultations on postsecondary education, fiscal balance, science and technology, foreign credential recognition and the annual federal budget.
