College Vocational

Program Description

The College Vocational Program is specifically for students with learning difficulties, and is designed to assist the student’s development in academics and work skills, as well as fostering personal growth and independence. The ultimate goal is preparation for employment. Through classroom learning and work experience, you'll have opportunities to gain life and vocational skills. The subjects are designed to enable you to progress in language and mathematics, as well as to gain knowledge and skills for living and working. Supervised work training experiences are the core of your studies. These experiences, along with individual vocational assessment and career subjects, assist and support you in planning realistically for an occupation and employment.

Admission Requirements

Program Eligibility:

• Ontario Secondary School Certificate with 14 credits (7 compulsory) or Ontario Secondary School Diploma with credits at the Workplace (W) or modified College Preparation (C) level or Mature Student Status (age 19 or older).

Applicant Selection:

• Comprehensive skills at Grade 6 level as evidenced by standardized testing. The CAAT C test is administered by Seneca College.
• Minimum age is 17 years for OSSC or OSSD Graduates.

The Importance of Learning Skills:

Student success in college requires well developed learning skills (such as being able to work independently, participate in a team, be well-organized, develop good work habits, and show initiative). These skills are as important as prior academic achievement. While it is expected that applicants would have developed these skills through previous education and life experiences, Seneca offers support to assist students with further development of these important skills.

Your Career

Earn an Ontario College Certificate and be ready for success in the workplace. The four-semester College Vocational program helps students with learning difficulties prepare for employment suited to their interests and experiences. Areas of opportunity may include merchandising, shipping and receiving, retail, food services, clerical, services to children, recreation, library, services to the aged, etc.

CVP Student Profile

To succeed in CVP, you should want to study in a classroom-based program as part of your vocational planning. You should also be willing to work in a group setting to learn interpersonal and problem-solving skills, and abide by the Student Rights and Responsibilities as outlined by Seneca College of Applied Arts and Technology.

As a student in the College Vocational program, you’ll work in an unpaid fieldwork placement without additional on-site support (i.e. job coach or educational assistant) and travel independently to and from work or school.

You must be aware of your disability situation and provide documentation regarding learning difficulties, disabilities, previous educational plans, and appropriate accommodations. You'll also be required to provide a TB immunization and a current vulnerable sector report. To be a successful candidate for CVP, you’ll need to understand your difficulties and be ready and willing to work towards overcoming these barriers to achieve vocational success.
