Child Development Practitioner is a non-restricted certified trade regulated by the Apprenticeship and Certification Act.  Upon the successful completion of the program, a person working in this trade is entitled to a Certificate of Apprenticeship.

Program Duration

  • Approximately three years or as determined by industry guidelines

Work Description

A child development practitioner is a person who:

  • Provides a physically safe, mentally healthy, and intellectually stimulating environment for groups of infants, toddlers, preschoolers, and school aged children
  • Observes and interprets children’s developmental levels and reactions to situations
  • Implements flexible curriculum which will meet the needs of each individual child in the group
  • Communicates positively and purposefully with children, parents, and other adults in the preschool and community
On-the-Job Training

At the time of registration, an apprentice receives an Apprenticeship Training Standard.  The Apprenticeship Training Standard outlines the skills, training objectives or competencies to be learned on the job.  These competencies equip an apprentice to work in the trade as a certified skilled worker or “journeyperson.”  The employer, sponsor or trainer of an apprentice signs the relevant section of the training standard to indicate the progress of the apprentice in learning individual training objectives.  This signature demonstrates that apprentice has learned, and demonstrated the skills established by industry that are essential for being a skilled worker.
